Ah, yes. Sailing. The open seas, the fresh breezes blowing in your face and the freedom to travel anywhere on the horizon. It’s got to be one of the greatest pleasures on Earth. You’d think that sailing is simple and everyone should be doing it. Well, it’s not really all that easy in the first place and you really do need to know what you are doing when in open water.
Here is a list of my top sailing tips for beginners:
1 – Learn The Terminology
Just like picking up a new language, sailing has words and phrases that are specific to the sport. Your first step into this world will be much easier if you do some advance studying about such things as port and stern and all the other related words you will need to know in order to speak and understand ‘sailing’ much better.
2 – Seek A Teacher
Sailing is something you can’t just learn from reading a book. There is no shortage of qualified instructors located all over the globe. Regardless of where you live, you will find one nearby who can teach you proper instruction. Picking up tips from a friend of a friend is not always a bad idea but a qualified instructor will be best.
3 – Start Small
As a beginner you should wait before you venture out into the open sea. To properly get the feel of your watercraft and hone your skills, spend time in small bodies of water that are not crowded. This way you can practice all the things you have been learning and you can practice them at your own pace. Take your time on this part.
4 – Observe The Conditions
The term ‘sailboat’ refers to the fact that your vessel uses a sail for motion. Weather is the key component to this and as such you will discover the need to learn and understand current and changing weather conditions. This skill will help you to enjoy a great day on the water as well as prepare you to deal with days that are not.
5 – Play It Safe
Remember to always put safety first and foremost in your sailing plan. There are specific safety procedures you must follow regardless of your sailing experience. These are in place to prevent incidents that could result in a dangerous situation and possibly injuries. Taking shortcuts is not allowed and should never be considered.
Sailing Takes A Bit Of Work In The Beginning
Once you learn the basics and improve those skills, you will be able to advance in your quest to become a sailor. Whether your goal is to just enjoy the freedom of sailing or to participate in the competitive world of racing, sailing skills will always be something you will be able to draw on throughout your life. Sailing is a great adventure that is best experienced after you have received proper instruction.
